A-Number/ Alien Registration Number
Unique 7, 8, or 9 digit number preceded by “A” assigned to each noncitizen by the Department of Homeland Security.
Admissibility
Eligibility of an alien to lawfully enter the United States after inspection and authorization by an immigration officer.
Affidavit
Document in which a person gives facts and swears that the facts are true and accurate as witnessed by a notary.
Affidavit of Support
A legally enforceable contract outlining the U.S. citizen or Lawful Permanent Resident sponsor’s financial responsibilities which generally last until the sponsored noncitizen either becomes a U.S. citizen or earns 40 quarters of credit with the Social Security Administration (usually within 10 years).
Beneficiary
A foreign national who is sponsored by a relative or a business or has self-petitioned for an immigration benefit.
· A principal beneficiary is a foreign national who is named on an immigrant or nonimmigrant petition or application to receive a benefit from USCIS.
· A derivative beneficiary is an immediate family member of the principal beneficiary eligible to receive an immigration benefit as a result of the grant of the principal beneficiary’s immigration petition.
